Ideas for Eagle Project

June, 2006
  1. Contacts.
    1. Make a list or some ideas and notes on what kind of Eagle project you want to do. Based on your participation in Eagle projects, what did you like or not like about the projects? It’s important to have some ideas so that when you talk to others you can have an intelligent discussion.
    2. Call up scouts who recently did Eagle projects, and ask their ideas and how they found their projects. Check out the most recent Troop 11 Eagle Projects.
    3. Many projects have been done at the Houston Arboretum in Memorial Park and the Houston Zoo.
    4. For many years one of the Bellaire parks, probably Russ Pitman Park at 7112 Newcastle, has sponsored several dozen Eagle projects, usually outdoor or nature study oriented. You can contact the City of Bellaire Parks and Recreation Department. It could take numerous contacts with them to get something done.
    5. These are some contacts with people who were operating volunteer programs for Scouts, mainly nature and ecology. This list may be out of date, but you may inquire if they have Eagle projects or know someone you can contact.
      1. Michael Chapman, (713) 464-0081. Runs workshops for Project Wild/Aquatic Wild.
      2. Kathy Hubbard, (713) 789-5993. Same as above.
      3. Glenn Buckley, (409) 273-0098. Same as above.

  2. Some general ideas about what an Eagle project should look like:
    1. More or less a minimum of 100 man hours by others than yourself. For example, 20 people x 5 hours. You are supposed to be the leader and organizer, not a worker.
    2. Get it over in one day. For example start at 8:30 AM, serve lunch to keep everybody working, and try to finish in 5 – 6 hours. You may have to do a lot of pre-planning and organizing beforehand in order to get so many people busy right away at starting time. Maybe you would want to start with a short organizing meeting so everybody understands what’s going on. Maybe appoint sub leaders and meet with them before the big day.
    3. Transportation and logistics should not be a problem for your workers. For example, fewer people will participate if the location is an hour’s drive away.
    4. Get a Life to Eagle Packet online. You can use the file as a word processing document to make changes and corrections.
Good luck!
